GALILEO at the 6th World Congress on Agroforestry – advancing agroforestry for people, planet and profit

The GALILEO project was proudly represented at the 6th World Congress on Agroforestry (WCA), held from 20 to 24 October 2025 in Kigali, Rwanda, under the theme “Agroforestry for People, Planet and Profit”, organised by the WCA partners with the support of the Government of Rwanda. The congress gathered over 800 participants from across the world (researchers, farmers, practitioners, policymakers, and development organisations) to explore how agroforestry contributes to sustainable land management, climate resilience, and inclusive rural development.

Among other GALILEO partners, Gian L. Nicolay (FiBL) also attended the WCA, delivering a presentation on social structures and policy frameworks from a scientific perspective. His presentation aligned closely with FiBL’s role in GALILEO, which focuses on monitoring, evaluation, and impact assessment of agroforestry innovations, as well as the development of methodological frameworks that link research, practice, and policy. FiBL also supports the project in scaling up agroforestry practices and strengthening co-creation processes within the Living Labs to foster climate-resilient livelihoods and sustainable food systems.

GALILEO was presented in the congress with two posters, showcasing the project’s innovative approach to knowledge co-creation and participatory design within its Living Labs in Senegal, Ghana, Kenya, and Cameroon.
The event served as an important networking platform, providing opportunities to exchange experiences with researchers, policymakers, and practitioners from across Africa and beyond. These interactions further reinforced GALILEO’s commitment to advancing agroforestry through collaborative learning and evidence-based policy recommendations.

The WCA schedule included a field visit to Bugesera and the Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture (RICA) a pioneering land-grant university, focusing on conservation agriculture with a growing emphasis on agroforestry in its research programs. The visit showcased long-term cooperation between RICA, the Buffet Foundation, and the Rwandan government in promoting sustainable land management and farmer education.

Through its presence at the congress, GALILEO contributed to global discussions on the transformative role of agroforestry in achieving environmental, economic, and social sustainability reinforcing its vision of connecting science, policy, and practice to support people, planet, and profit.
