Building a shared agroforestry vision in Kenya: GALILEO’s group discussion in the Embu Living Lab
The Living Lab in Kenya starts as a blank slate — a brand-new initiative with vast potential.
To better navigate this uncharted landscape, the GALILEO Kenya team organized a week-long focus group series in May. The aim was to move beyond the individual surveys conducted so far and collaboratively shape a shared vision for agroforestry in the region — understanding its roots, present dynamics, and future challenges.
This activity was led by a multidisciplinary team from the University of Embu, Farm Africa, and CIRAD, combining strengths in agriculture, development, and research.
Each session gathered 15 to 20 local farmers for deep discussions. Together, they examined key themes including the structure of agrarian and socio-ecosystems, the area’s historical background, major agricultural stakeholders, existing opportunities and barriers to agroforestry, and innovative practices already emerging locally.
